The New Generation of LiftMaster Garage Door Openers is Here

For nearly 60 years they have developed a reputation of trust and durability and are now a common household name. Whenever someone asks me for my professional opinion on what garage door opener they should install in their house, I always say one name, LiftMaster.

For years, garage door openers would communicate through a single code radio frequency between the motor and the remote. This would be a code preset thought a sequence of dip switches that were set to the same numbers on both the opener unit and on the remote. This resulted in easily being able to “hack” or discover the code by people that wanted to break into someone’s garage or property. Garage door opener manufacturers needed to find a better solution to increase security in their products. In 1996, LiftMaster introduced rolling code technology to their operators and called it Security+.

So, what is rolling code technology?

The Chamberlain Group, who owns LiftMaster, explains what rolling code is perfectly:

“Rolling code protects against intruders by generating a new security code every time the remote control is used on your garage door opener.

When the remote control activates the garage door opener, a unique algorithm "rolls" the remote control's code to one of more than 100 billion possible codes. The previously used code will be discarded, and the opener will only respond to the new code the next time the remote control is used. The same code will never be used more than once. Stolen codes are useless to intruders.”

Security+ provided millions of customers with peace of mind when closing their garage doors when leaving their home. LiftMaster wanted to increase their customers’ confidence and introduced Security+ 2.0 16 years later in 2012. Security+ 2.0 was designed to send out multiple frequencies with rolling code technology and picks the strongest frequency available. This way, it eliminates interference with other technology and frequencies. Along with these upgrades, a few years later, LiftMaster introduced myQ® Wi-Fi to Security+ 2.0, bringing the era of smart home integration into your garage.

Now 9 years later, LiftMaster is unleashing Security+ 3.0 with their new line of garage door openers. This new Security+ generation introduces more robust security, quieter garage door openers, seamless device and accessory management though the myQ® app, and more!

What's new with Security+ 3.0?

As with the previous Security+ generations, LiftMaster wanted to improve the security of their garage door openers as well as the peace of mind of their customers. Security+ 3.0 now has Bluetooth® technology integrated into the remotes for easy and seamless connectivity and reliability.

Brian from the LiftMaster team says, “all our 3.0 products are now operating on Bluetooth technology, rather than relying on radio frequencies…. With Bluetooth, you'll see a seamless door opening experience with one time button press and full remote range, resulting in a more positive customer experience…. most importantly, 3.0 provides a more secure, two way communication from remote to opener. So when you press the remote button, it sends a signal to the opener, and the opener sends a confirmation signal back to the remote. Then the garage door opens. 
If any of your customers have expressed concerns over security or have asked you about the risk of code grabbers or something similar they've seen in the news, 3.0 will help alleviate those concerns.”

A lot of homeowners want a reliable and long range for their garage door opener remotes. The 2.0 remotes had a ~200-foot range, the 3.0 with Bluetooth®? About 1300 feet!

Using the myQ® app, you can scan the QR code on the back of the remote and it will sync with your Security+ 3.0 garage door opener. You can then name and manage that remote, that means you can receive notifications when it is used or delete it if you lose it.

I have been called to many customers’ homes over the years to wipe the memory on their garage door openers due to them losing a remote and then needing to reconnect all of their accessories.
