A Brief History of LiftMaster Security+ Technology
For decades, garage door openers communicated through a single fixed-code radio frequency between the motor and the remote — set using a sequence of DIP switches that had to match on both the opener unit and the remote. The problem? Those fixed codes were easy to intercept and replay, making it simple for someone to gain unauthorized access to your garage.
In 1996, LiftMaster introduced rolling code technology and called it Security+. Rolling code works by generating a brand-new security code every single time you press the remote. A unique algorithm rolls the code to one of over 100 billion possible combinations. The previously used code is immediately discarded, and the opener will only respond to the new code the next time. The same code is never used twice — making stolen codes completely useless to intruders.
Security+ gave millions of homeowners genuine peace of mind. Then in 2012, LiftMaster introduced Security+ 2.0 — sending signals across multiple frequencies simultaneously using rolling code technology, picking the strongest available signal to eliminate interference. A few years later, myQ® Wi-Fi was added to Security+ 2.0, bringing smart home integration into the garage for the first time.

What's New With Security+ 3.0?
Now LiftMaster has taken another major leap forward with Security+ 3.0 — and the upgrades are significant. According to Chamberlain Group, which owns LiftMaster, Security+ 3.0 introduces Bluetooth® technology as the foundation of all remote communication, moving away from traditional radio frequencies entirely.
Here's what that means in practice: when you press your remote, it sends a signal to the opener, and the opener sends a confirmation signal back to your remote before the door moves. It's a true two-way communication system — far more secure and reliable than anything that came before it. Brian from the LiftMaster team describes it as delivering a seamless, one-press door opening experience with full remote range and dramatically improved security against code-grabbing devices.
The range upgrade alone is remarkable. Security+ 2.0 remotes reached approximately 200 feet. Security+ 3.0 with Bluetooth®? Up to 1,300 feet.

Smart Remote Management With the myQ® App
One of the most practical upgrades in Security+ 3.0 is how remotes and accessories are managed. Using the myQ® app, you simply scan the QR code on the back of any remote to sync it with your opener. From there, you can name each remote, receive notifications every time it's used, and delete a remote instantly if it's ever lost — all from your phone.
As someone who has driven to countless customers' homes over the years just to wipe the memory on an opener because a remote was lost, I can tell you firsthand how valuable this feature is. No more wiping the entire system and reprogramming every accessory from scratch. You're fully in control, from the palm of your hand.
The myQ® app also integrates with Amazon Key In-Garage Delivery, allowing secure package deliveries directly into your garage — even when you're not home.

The Three Security+ 3.0 Tiers: Basic, Plus, and Premium

LiftMaster has also simplified their product lineup into three clearly defined tiers, making it much easier to choose the right opener for your home and budget.
Basic
The entry-level tier — compact DC motors built for everyday reliability. The 2420L adds battery backup, which is especially valuable here in Arizona where power outages during monsoon season can leave you locked out of your own garage. Comes with a 5-year warranty.
Plus
The mid-tier sweet spot for most homeowners. Adds motion-detecting LED lighting, a swivel camera with live view through the myQ® app, and battery backup included as standard. Comes with a 6-year warranty.
Premium
LiftMaster's flagship opener. Features the most powerful DC motor in the lineup, ring LED lighting with corner-to-corner coverage, a full wide-angle adjustable camera, and the most comprehensive myQ® smart home integration available. Backed by a lifetime warranty. You can learn more about the Premium 6690L directly on LiftMaster's website.

Is Security+ 3.0 Compatible With My Existing System?
This is one of the most common questions we're getting. The short answer is: Security+ 3.0 remotes and keypads are not backward compatible with Security+ 2.0 openers, and vice versa. If you're upgrading to a 3.0 opener, you'll need 3.0 accessories to go with it. Older remotes like the 893MAX and 877LM will not work with the new units.
However, the good news is that the rail and bracket hardware is unchanged from Security+ 2.0 — so existing rail inventory carries over, and installation is just as straightforward.
If you're not sure whether your current system is compatible or whether an upgrade makes sense for your situation, give us a call. We'll give you a straight answer — no upsell, no pressure.
